Size & Population
10 Sq Km with an estimated 150,000 residents.

There are five sub-zones in Geylang mainly Kallang Way, MacPherson, Kampong Ubi, Aljunied and Geylang East.

Back in the olden days, the Geylang Serai area served as a centre of Singapore’s native (Malay) community. Tradition these days still prevails with the Geylang Serai village.

An area abundant with old shophouses dating back to the early 1900s, it is a rare corner of Singapore which is slowly scheduled for redevelopment. The area also hosts several famed local eateries along the district’s major roads.

Geylang was a settlement for the “Orang Laut” or sea people and Malays. The area had coconut plantations and was once known as Geylang Kelapa. “Kelapa” means coconut in Malay. But since the start of the 20th century it has been known as Geylang Serai. “Serai” is Malay for lemon grass, which was also found in the area.

XXX in Geylang
Currently, Geylang is also notoriously known as Singapore’s main red light district. The legalized designated prostitution zone is towards south of Geylang Road (starts from Lorong 2 and extends all the way to Lorong 30). Keong Saik Street located in the Chinatown is another area in Singapore that has been an 'approved' red light district.

Medium-sized residential area with small businesses around the Paya Lebar MRT Station area. The stretch along Geylang Road and Changi Road is used mainly for residential purposes. Serving some 102,000 residents, the 31,600 units of flats in the town are mostly 3-roomers to 4-roomers; of which 6,200 units are available for rental.

Travelling to Geylang is easy. Several MRT stations are located nearby; namely the Aljunied, Kallang and Paya Kebar MRT stations. The Geylang Lorong 1 Bus terminal that serves the district roads is located in the Kallang Planning area.
