In the midst of Bishan’s distinctive neighbourhood lies an interesting landmark the locals call Junction 8. This hive of activity centering around the shopping mall is located almost directly above the MRT station. The Bishan interchange is also not too far away and thus completes the accessibility to this shopper’s paradise. The latter in particular to this place are mostly students in the afternoons, and families, young couples and children in the evenings. Statistics show that about 1.8 million shoppers pass through its doors per month.

Completed in 1994, the prime mall comprises of five floors and 170 shops catering to the middle-income families with a shop mix of household names like Bata, U2, and Giordano to Singapore’s favourite bakery, Breadtalk.  Its key tenants include departmental store Seiyu, NTUC Fairprice, Golden Village and Best Denki.

Junction 8 is a hot location for autograph sessions for artistes and auditions for reality television shows like Singapore Idol, etc. An Open Landscape Plaza on Level 3, known as “Top of the 8”, comes complete with a projection screen and children’s playground to host activities and events. This therefore creates a vibrant, hipper feel than other suburban shopping malls. In addition, a “youth zone” is sited up with the many youth – oriented shops and push carts.

You will come across some great finds when shopping around in Junction 8. An example, step into Nails in Vogue and they will offer you cheap manicures at just $10 and pedicures at $15.

On the down side, the layout of the mall is quite confusing. This is due to the new addition to the mall, new double storey extension and two annexes on both sides of the mall. The escalators however are far apart. You will certainly have no choice but to walk along the whole line of shops on each floor.
