Any living creature is going to come with its own special list of problems when it is trying to adapt to a new environment and a Shih Tzu is no different. Shih Tzu problems can range from biting to housebreaking issues but if you understand why your dog is behaving a particular way then it is a little easier to devise a plan to bring that behavior to an end. With the Shih Tzu it is all about patience.
Shih Tzu breeds are very proper little dogs and they absolutely hate a lot of yelling, screaming, loud noises, and clatter of any kind. A person running all around also causes tension for your Shih Tzu and they respond to all of this by biting. This is one of the main reasons why Shih Tzu dogs are said to not be great dogs for kids. Of course not every dog is the same but for the most part the Shih Tzu is not a great dog for kids unless you take the time to train it very well- and it does take time. Of all of the Shih Tzu problems you will encounter none will be more aggravating and frustrating that the little dogs arrogant attitude. They are very regal animals that have a bit of Chinese royalty in their blood and they never forget that. It takes a long time to get the Shih Tzu to understand that they are not the boss and you are, and even when you think they understand it they are still going to do pretty much whatever they want to do. Shih Tzu dogs are not going to go jogging with you and they won't be joining you for a run in the park either. They do not require a lot of exercise and while they can be very fun and playful dogs they are not known for covering a lot of ground while playing. If you are looking for a jogging partner the Shih Tzu is not for you. Probably the most frustrating, and common, of Shih Tzu problems is that their arrogance and stubbornness can cause them to not take to housebreaking at all. If you are in the middle of housebreaking a Shih Tzu, which will be a several month process even in the best of cases, and something spooks the dog then you are back to square one. Your only weapon is positive reinforcement and a lot of praise because if they don't understand what you want then they will do whatever they want. A Shih Tzu is a very independent thinking dog that is not going to wait for you to figure out what it wants to do. They are very confident and arrogant and that can cause problems when you are trying to train them. It is going to require a lot of patience and persistence to get them to understand who is boss but in the end, if you always keep your cool and follow the rules of training a Shih Tzu, you should be able to get your dog to where you are both happy. |
