Shar Pei Personality Types

By: Melissacoleman
The Shar Pei dog, native to China, is uniquely identified for its deep wrinkles and blue-black tongue. At a young age the wrinkles are more numerous than at adult age. Time Magazine and the Guinness Book of World Records once identified this dog as one of the most rare dogs in the world.

Generally, the Shar Pei is a healthy dog, but its vulnerability towards many diseases like painful eye conditions, allergy-prone skin complications, fever, kidney and liver complications are quite apparent.

Chinese Shar Pei dogs were originally bred for dog fighting in China. They have a very nice and protective personality, while being truly affectionate and loyal to the family. However, these dogs are somewhat suspicious about outsiders and they often take time to become comfortable visitors. Even people with highly sociable personalities need to make a real effort to have a good relationship with one. However, the Shar Pei has a penchant to protect its family and it does its best to guard family members from any undesirable incidence.

The personality of the Shar Pei needs to be taken under serious consideration. If breeders do not take enough care in this aspect, the buyers may end up with great frustration by having a puppy that wrong for the family. The breeders are solely responsible for analyzing and evaluating the personality of the Shar Pei dogs during the breeding time for it must be done with enough expertise and understanding. Even the owner's personality must be aligned with the personality of Shar Pei. Shar Pei is not a suitable dog for soft and tender people.

The personality of the Shar Pei can be subdivided under three categories known as dominant, submissive and independent. While the occurrence of a distinctive personality trait is most common, overlapping of personality traits may seem to be apparent in only a few cases. The dominant Shar Pei can be a good choice for people with a tough personality and devoted learning skills for handling dogs. Although a dominant Shar Pei is quite appealing with their macho and confident personality, it could harm people just by being excessively dominant.

The submissive Shar Pei dog is easier to handle. But they lack the proper instinct to be trained easily due to their low self-confidence and reluctant behavior for trying out new things. However, this dog can mingle with other dogs, so it can be effortlessly facilitated into multi-dog environment.

But feeling of fear or defensive behavior may lead this type of dog to act violently in some cases, so enduring socialization is always required. The independent Shar Pei dog is most difficult to train since it does not really care about owner's approval and is not very fond of any human companionship.

Shar Pei dog training is tough, so it needs dedication and determination. Although they are mostly identified by their robust deterministic personality, devoted attitude and intelligence, they may break out with intense aggression defensive behavior in the presence of unknown individuals. As we know personality is greatly influence by genetic makeup, the same is true with the Shar Pei dog. They are genetically predisposed towards aggressive behavior, so before buying you need to think thoroughly about the best suitable personality dog for you and your family.
