Over the years, central heating has developed more efficiently, as technologies have enhanced the way water is heated and distributed in our homes. Like thermostats, electronic systems have enabled users to control the quantity of heat to be distributed and advances in boiler design mean that less gas can do more that it used to be able to. Nevertheless, a lot of ways can be used in which the efficiency of your central heating system can be developed further. The following are some of the ways to improve your heating system;

Fully Pumped System: The thought behind this system is that by pumping water from the boiler to the water tank instead of relying on the heating systems natural pressure. By doing this the water is heated up quicker and so the boiler fires for less time, which should save money by using less gas.

Hydroflow device: British Gas recommends these to its central heating insurance customers, especially those in hard water areas. The device works by breaking down limescale deposits within the water pipes that supply a house's boiler and other appliances using electric fields. A 1mm build-up of limescale can reduce the efficiency of a heating system by up to 10%.

PowerFlush treatment: Another free service offered by British Gas to its central heating insurance customers (provided it is necessary to do it, of course). A complete system drain is first undertaken, before the entire system is flushed with a cleansing agent. The benefit of this is the removal of sludge and dirt that builds up naturally in a central heating system over time.

Radiator reflectors: Available from any good home improvement store, these foil backings sit behind radiators in order to reflect heat into the room where it is needed, rather than being lost heating up the wall. They are simple to fit and best of all they are cheap. They can allow the thermostat of the home to be turned down slightly because the heat produced is being used more efficiently.

Regular servicing: Just like a car or other mechanical device, a boiler will benefit from regular servicing to keep it burning as it should.
