[C853]Commercial Stack Paper Cutter
by Jeff McRitchie, Jef

Overview:

  • The Martin Yale 700E is a heavy duty, table-top commercial quality paper cutter that can cut up to 1-1/2" of paper at a time.

  • This heavy duty paper cutter is ideal for small print shops and organizations that need to cut small to medium volumes of paper quickly and accurately.

  • The 700E commercial stack cutter is ideal for photo shops, schools, churches, small print shops and professional organizations.

Strengths / Features:

  • Although it is not a true ream cutter, the Martin Yale 700E cutter is capable of easily cutting up to 375 sheets of 20lb paper at a time. This makes this an ideal cutter for churches and businesses that need to cut large stacks of paper for the production of flyers, brochures and sales materials.

  • The Martin Yale 700E has a manually operated paper clamp that is designed to hold documents in place during cutting. It also has an easy to adjust paper stop to help in aligning the paper on the cutter for precise cutting. These features are extremely helpful in ensuring that documents are cut straight and true.

  • The Martin Yale 700E is an extremely sharp cutter and thus can be very dangerous if not used properly. With this in mind, Martin Yale included a blade latch that is designed to prevent cutting until the latch is released. This feature requires two hands for cutting which helps to prevent fingers from getting caught under the razor sharp blade.

  • The 700E has a long cutting handle and a heavy wooden base. These features help to provide leverage in cutting large stacks of paper. When combined with the extremely sharp blade used by this cutter, you can slice through large stacks of paper like they are butter.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

  • The Martin Yale 700E paper cutter is equipped with a twelve inch long cutting blade. This is ideal for cutting or trimming letter sized documents. However, the 700E cannot trim larger documents where a cut length longer than 12" is required.

  • Although the Martin Yale 700E uses a blade latch to help ensure safety, it is still a dangerous piece of equipment. Once the latch has been disengaged it is possible to remove your hand from the latch to complete the cutting process. This presents a potential safety issue if you are not careful. It is important to never take security for granted when using a large paper cutter such as this. Some organizations even place a lock on their cutters when they are not in use to prevent children from accidentally injuring themselves.

  • The clamping mechanism on the 700E paper cutter is actually quite effective in holding pages in place during the cutting process. The clamp should be snug, but not excessively tight on the sheets. A snug clamp, along with a sharp blade will give you a smooth, accurate cut.

  • Like any cutter, the 7000E functions best with a sharpened blade. Some users will find a tiny bit of movement in the stack while cutting and will try to tighten the clamp more, when the real culprit is a dull blade. It's a good idea to have an extra blade and always keep a sharp one on hand. The blade changing process is a bit laborious and will take about 45 minutes.

  • The Martin Yale 700E is an excellent high volume stack cutter. However, it is not ideal for cutting one or two sheets of paper at a time. For small volume trimming jobs it is best to use a guillotine style paper cutter or a rotary trimmer.

Recommendation:

  • The Martin Yale 700e stack paper cutter is ideal for churches, offices and organizations that need to cut large volumes of paper at a time.

  • It offers a twelve inch cutting length, an excellent paper clamping system and a paper stop to help align the pages on the cutter.

  • As with all high capacity paper cutters, caution should be used when operating the Martin Yale 700e. It has an extremely sharp blade that could easily cause severe injuries if the safety mechanisms are disabled or the cutter is operated without care.

Everyday online shopping sites get many questions about purchasing equipment. Sometimes these involve stack paper cutters. Most of the time, these purchases are made by a customer who is frustrated with the multiple cuts that they make with their guillotine cutters, and are looking to save time with less cuts. A stack cutter is the perfect option. Stack or ream cutters are perfect for print shops, schools, and large businesses. Shopping for the right stack cutter can be easy if you narrow down what you are actually looking for.

Cut Length

Typically most stack cutters are designed for either 8.5” x 11” or 11” x 17” sized paper. Most of the time, the maximum width will have extra room to accommodate for adjustments. For example, if you are looking for a paper cutter for your 8.5” x 11” paper, you will want to find one that is around 11-1/2” to 12” for the maximum cut width.

Sheet Cut Capacity

This is the most important aspect of a stack paper cutter. The sheet cut capacity will be the maximum number of 20 lb sheets that the cutter can cut. This capacity ranges between 120 to 800. This is sometimes calculated by cut width. Cut width is the actual height of the stack of papers. This can be a better estimate as users do not typically cut hundreds of sheets of paper by counting.

Safety Features

Cutting multiple sheets of paper can be very dangerous when it comes to the blade. Two handed operation means that both hands need to be utilized in order to cut. This can prevent injuries while not making it possible for an idle hand to be resting by the blade. Other popular safety features include safety case, and locking blade.

Minimum Cut

While most of the cuts that are made with a stack paper cutters are large, there are some cutting operations that require a narrow cut. For example, if you are cutting bookmarks, you want to be sure that the stack cutter you are looking for can make cuts smaller than 2”. This is the minimum amount that can be cut off from the stack. Not all cutters have this spec listed. Call your rep for more information.

Cutting Base

Stack paper cutters will be equipped with either a wood or metal base. Ideally, there should be measurement guides printed on the base in easy to read increments. Additionally, every stack cutter should have a clamp or backstop attached to the base, that can be used to create a guide for cutting. This will save time when it comes to cutting multiple reams of paper that will be cut the same size.

Optional Features

Some cutter will have additional features to aid in accurate cutting. Though not always necessary, laser guides, and stands can make it easy to cut the stacks of paper.

Hopefully these tips will aid in choosing the right stack paper cutter for your business, or office. If you do not need to cut at least 120 pages each time, then a guillotine or rotary trimmer will probably do the job that you need.
