A software systemis a system based on software forming part of a computer system (a combinationof hardware and software). The term softwaresystem is often used as a synonym of computer programs me or softwarethe term software system isrelated to the application of systems theory approaches in software engineeringcontext. This approach is often used to study large and complex software, because it focuses on the major componentsof software and their interactions. The term software system isalso related to the field of softwarearchitecture.
Major categories of software systems include applicationsoftware, programming software and systemsoftware, although the distinction can sometimes be difficult.Examples of software systems include computerreservations system, air trafficcontrol software, military command and control systems, telecommunicationnetworks, web browsers, contentmanagement systems, databasemanagement systems, expertsystems, spreadsheets, theoremplovers, window systems, wordprocessors, etc. Software systems are an active area of research forgroups interested in software engineering in particular and systemsengineering in general.
Practical computersystems divide software systems into three major classes: system software, programming software and application software, although the distinction isarbitrary, and often blurred.
System software
System software helpsrun the computer hardware and computer system, it includes:
? Text editors?compilers
? Interpreters
? Linkers
? Debuggers, and soon
An Integrateddevelopment environment (IDE) merges those tools into a software bundle, and aprogrammer may not need to type multiple commands for compiling, interpreting, debugging, tracing, and etc., because the IDE usually has an advanced graphicuser interface or GUI.
Programming software
Programming softwareprovides tools to assist a programming in writing, computerprograms and software using different programming languages in a moreconvenient way. The tools include:
? Text editors
? Compilers
? Interpreters
? Debuggers, and soon
An integrateddevelopment environment (IDE)merges those tools into a software bundle, and aprogrammer may not need to type multiple commands for compiling, interpreting, debugging, tracing, and etc,, because the IDE usually has an advanced graphicuser interface, or GUI.
Application software
Application softwareallows end users to accomplish one or more specific (non-computer related)tasks typical applications include:
? Industrialautomaton
?business software
? Educationalsoftware
? Medical software
? Databases
? Computer games
