The latest parenting “thing” is to potty train a baby right out of the womb. As if getting born is not a tough enough situation, you now have to learn how to use the potty before even walk to the bathroom. OH- I almost forgot the best part: These babies do not wear diapers or lower undergarments of any kind.
As I understand it, parents watch their baby and when it begins to grimace ( a sure sign of abdominal activity apparently) they shove a potty under him or her. Now whether or not you are a parent, you might know that babies grimace for all sorts of reasons:
They grimace when they are wet and when they are dry. They pout when they are cold and use the same facial expression when they are hot. Their face scrunches up when they are hungry and when they are not. In short, a baby's face is a paradox unto itself. Many a parent has tried to translate these facial expressions and it's only through trial and error that we even come close to knowing what is annoying the baby at any given moment. With them it's a game I think.
So now affluent parents who don't have to work and live with homes containing several bathrooms and the less fortunate earthy crunchy types who live frugally off the proceeds from selling flavored leaves and sticks can join forces in this new MOVEment. (Pun intended.)
What about the rest of us? Imagine sitting on a crowded bus when baby has to go. Do these folks just whip out a potty from the baby bag and sit the bare bottomed baby on it? What happens at a restaurant? Whatever it is - is less than appetizing. What if a contorted face is misinterpreted and the baby is given a bottle instead of a potty? The scenarios are scary.
I hope when my kids have kids, this phenomenon is part of history. Otherwise, I will have to spread newspaper all over the house. By then however doing do so might be as convenient for me as it would be for my grandchild – if you get my meaning.
