Satellite TV programming has come a long way since DirecTV was launched in nineteen-ninety-four and the choices that there are for the viewer now are truly astounding when compared to what was available just ten years ago. High definition programming is the latest technology to become available and the difference that the higher quality and more precise picture and sound make on the total viewing experience cant be underestimated.

If you have been shopping around for a reasonably priced high definition programming package, maybe one thing that you should consider is what DirecTV has to offer in high definition programming. At DirecTV instead of having to buy a whole high definition programming package, they let you pick and choose from their wide selection of twenty high definition channels and allow you to add on only the channels or channel that you want.

For instance if all that you are interested in for you high definition viewing is classic movies, then DirecTV has the Universal HD channel that you can select out. For more recent movie releases they have HDNet movies also. With these two high definition channels you will have a steady supply of high definition movies and you aren't paying for channels in a package that you really arent interested in.

Nature and science programming is fantastic in high definition and the detail that you can see in it is simply phenomenal. With DirecTV's Discovery HD Theater channel you will be in for a real treat in high definition nature and science programming. The high definition picture on the screen is six times as resolute and precise as on a standard TV screen and for sports programming it makes a world of difference. DirecTV has you covered in the area of high definition sports programming with ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD.

You are going to need a good quality high definition receiver if you opt for high definition programming from DirecTV and for this they have your choice between two top of the line Hughes receivers. These receivers are name brand equipment and the Hughes Electronics name caries with it a long standing reputation for quality and reliability. Hughes Electronics is not an off brand name and in fact the Hughes Electronics Corporation is a subsidiary of the Chrysler Corporation, as is DirecTV itself.

You get your choice between two models of Hughes high definition receivers and both of them also receive standard programming as well. The first one is a basic model for someone that wont be needing a lot of extra features such as DVD and custom menu. The other high definition receiver that they have for you comes laden with features including DVR that holds a combined total of one-hundred and twenty-five hours of standard and high definition recordings. It's entirely digital, so there are no tapes or discs to mess with and finding and playing your recorded material is as simple as operating a CD player.
