Transportation refers to movement of people and goods from one place to some other place. Industries that carry on their business of supplying transport equipments, transport facilities or transport are very essential for the economic development of the country. The field of transport can be further divided into vehicles, infrastructure and operations.

Transport is one of the major areas in the services sector. Without adequate facilities even social activities cannot be carried out. Increased economic activities have created a demand for larger mobility of passenger and freights. Total movement of freight grew by about 17 per cent since 1990s. While the growth in railway freight during this period was about 10 per cent, it was about 120 per cent in case of roads. Passenger movement by roads was 5 times more than the other three modes of transport.

The important modes of transport are roadways, railways or airways. India as a rapid developing nation demands the necessity of transportation. Even with the expansion of the export, there is a greater need to expand the facilities of transportation. In simple words it can be understood that transportation is the backbone for the development of the nation.
