You And Your Childs Doctor
by Beth Thompson, Bet
However, if you are unhappy or you move location how do I find a doctor that is suitable for your child? The best option is probably to ask your friends and your family members who have children, which is their pediatrician, and are they happy with the service provided. Apart from that you should not be afraid to interview a pediatrician and reject them if you are unhappy for any reason, it is your child not theirs.

A doctor who specializes in children's health should be, monitoring of health, growth and development of your child. Should be well capable of performing a diagnosis, explain and treat minor illnesses or more serious problems. They should also be able to provide information and answer your questions. The doctor should not be afraid to send you to see other health professionals if your child needs special skills because of illness.

When should I take my child to a first visit with her doctor? In general, a health care provider examines a baby in the weeks following its discharge from hospital. During this first visit, the care provider should check your baby's weight and measure its size and head circumference. Also check if it shows signs of jaundice, and check how feeding is going for you and your baby. They will constantly review the overall health of the baby and conduct any screening tests that have not been performed at the hospital.

It is not necessary that your pediatrician or your family doctor give these first few examinations. It is sometimes given by a doctor at the hospital where you have given birth by your midwife or a nurse. It may take place at home, office or clinic of a hospital.

In general, the first visit by your baby to the doctor takes place from the age of 2 months. Regular visits will follow at 4, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months to 2 years, then once a year to 5 years. From 5 years, your child will see his doctor every 1 or 2 years until age 18, although of course any ongoing problems that may occur would change this.

The visit of the baby or child health lasts 10 to 20 minutes, your doctor and his staff will check the weight, size and cranial circumference of your child. Discuss the eating habits of your child and answer any questions about nutrition. They should also give you safety tips and other types of advice related to the age and capabilities of your baby.

You will need to learn about stages of development of your child, like eating on their own or when they learn to become self sufficient in little chores. The doctor should also examine the social and emotional development of your child such as their ability in learning words. As your child grows, it is the right time to discuss with the doctor any school and social or emotional problems. You should also discuss any problems that occur at home. The doctor should of course administer all vaccines that are recommended as they become due.
