The ClearCube Split & Apple Breakup Conundrum Since the beginning of the personal computer market, one argument was defined by an initial disagreement between Apple and Microsoft about whether PC hardware and software needed to be closely coupled. Microsoft initially appeared to win this disagreement. (A copy of the letter to Apple's CEO from Bill Gates suggesting Apple license can be found here.)How does it look now? Well, look at Palm which...... Similar Editorial : Why Split by Konstantin Goudkov. | Source : Technology Marketing
Will HP Buy Alcatel-Lucent? HP is one of several firms aggressively doing acquisitions. Its latest, EDS, takes it one big step closer to being able to build a cloud-based IT outsourcing business, likely catching most of its competitors by surprise and effectively cornering this market.Another high-profile HP effort is Halo, which just got an award for environmental responsibility. Given the American Airlines announcement...... Similar Editorial : Alcatel E230 Orange by Richard Meyers. | Source : Financial Technology
Open Source Technology | Microsoft GM Bill Hilf & Server Strategy Watching Microsoft deal with open source’s popularity kind of mirrors the Five Steps of Grief, normally applied when someone faces a terrible loss. Those steps are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. We saw all of the stages initially: Microsoft blew off open source efforts; executives got mad and called it names; we had sites like “Get the Facts,” which seemed to be a way to...... Apple, Microsoft & Google Technology : Technology News Like Netscape back in the mid-nineties,?Google is planning to blindside everyone else with an aggressive rush to the cloud and a plan that encompasses everything from applications to transport to radically change how we compute.Apple, primarily with the iPhone, has redefined what the user interface is, and how software can be reliably delivered,?possibly sidestepping the problems PC vendors have...... Can Employee Blogs Get You Sued? I blogged back in August about the increasingly fuzzy line between personal and business activities online, noting that Whole Foods CEO John Mackey's anonymous posts on Yahoo financial forums not only embarrassed the company when Mackey was outed but also briefly threatened its acquisition of rival Wild Oats Markets.Anonymity and aliases on the Internet, while common, are rarely a good idea, wrote...... I - I - IMac! Hype Meets Analysts What new product gets more press attention than a new Porsche? What can generate more buzz than bear at a beehive? It's abird, it's a plane . . . it's super fruit! Apple Computer canand does get that kind of attention, and it does so regularly. Hyperbole begins well in advance of each semiannual MacWorld, and begins with the Mac publications and rumor sites. Every Macdevotee imagines a revolutionary...... Source : Macintosh Notebook
Why Microsoft Needs To Rethink Windows I think creating a new core OS could fix a problem that Microsoft started in the 90s and better respond competitively to the MacOS and Linux. Sound impossible? Microsoft is large enough to do anything. It is hard to imagine that moving to a new code base?could be any worse than the mess now being vetted in public resulting from the Vista litigation. For comparison's sake, Apple couldn’t restart the...... Is The Google War Smart If, before we went to war in Iraq, we listed the resources it would cost against a list of things the U.S. needed to do in the economic, infrastructure, health, safety and world influence arenas, I doubt any sane decision maker would have made “war” the top choice.Yet it was the easiest. It was simple and few looked at the opportunity cost (and almost everyone who did underestimated it).At the...... Microsoft Didnt Cheat With OOXML Approval? I've been watching the approval process for OOXML with some interest. Never before have I seen a vendor that has the existing standard for anything challenged in this fashion. I'm not sure what it means for the market, but regardless of which side you are on, I think both sides can agree the process sure made ISO look like a joke. Seriously, when should an approval process look like a U.S....... Similar Editorial : Why Men Cheat by Gregory Lions. | Source : Buy Microsoft Office 2007
