[H1245]How To Heat Basement
by Gen Wright, Gen
Obviously, you want your basement to be as comfortable as possible. When the weather is cold, especially in winter, you need some way to keep your basement warm. And when it comes to heating systems, there are many different types of systems that you can choose from. The key elements that you should take into consideration are: energy consumption, environmentally friendliness, and effectiveness.

Radiant heating systems.

Radiant heating systems are very commonly seen in basements. They are clean, energy efficient, and very effective. It is easy to understand how radiant heating systems work.

Radiant heating systems warm up the basement by heating up the floor. Flexible radiation tube are installed under the floor, or behind wall panels. Air or water can be in the tubes, and they carry with them heat energy. Electricity is used to produced the heat. Through the radiators, the floor is heated up, and the basement stays warm.

When using radiant systems, you have to be a little careful about the materials that you choose for your basement. That is because some materials do not go well with air and water. For instance, wood has a tendency to rot when exposed to excess moisture. For this reason, you may need to laminate your wood to protect the materials from being damaged by the moisture that is generated by radiant heating systems.

As the radiator tubes run beneath floor and wall panels, they are invisible. The entire heating system works quietly to keep the room warm. It's so quiet that you may even sleep in the room if you want to.

Other heating options.

Since there are many different options available in the market, it's up to you to decide whether a heavy duty system (more costly of course) is more suitable, or if a cheaper and simpler solution is better fit. This depends on how much time you intend to spend in the basement. If you are going to spend huge amounts of time in your basement working, perhaps it's a good idea to invest in a heating system that provides more even and consistent heating.

If you are just going to linger in the basement for short periods of time to do some reading in the winter, maybe a small fireplace can provide you with a cozy reading environment. The drawback is that a fireplace can be costly to install.

You can also use an electric baseboard heater. The heater heats up the flooring, and warm air rises. Cold air sinks towards the floor to be heated up, and the cycle continues. This is a hassle free solution as it doesn't involve ducts.

Whatever budget you have in mind, there should be some type of heating system that will be suitable for you. So there is absolutely no need to bear the cold weather!
