[H1231]How To Grow Dreadlocks
by Jeffery Bradley, Jef
Locticians assist you in making sure the dreadlock process is not difficult. They create "buds" or handmade "baby" dreadlocks with your hair using different techniques such as the palm roll, 2-stand method, Sista Locs, and others. They continue to provide maintenance until your hair matures into dreadlocks.

After the first visit, it may take six months or less before you have good strong dreadlocks. Depending on the texture of your hair, you may need to visit your loctician two to four times a month. At a cost anywhere between thirty-five and seventy-five dollars each appointment, using a loctician can become expensive.

Locticians are very flexible. Some work out of their homes but most majority work for a beauty salon. Currently no licensing or certification exists for locticians. The loctician you choose should have some type of training and lots of experience.

Here are five ways a loctician will help you grow dreadlocks:

1. Makes the natural route more presentable. During the "natural route", you allow your hair to get as kinky as it can get. Within three to six months you will grow a very unkempt afro that evolves into dreadlocks. Though the afro may look beautiful and powerful to you, to others it gives the impression you just don't give a damn.

A loctician can eliminate this stage by creating dreadlocks through twisting or backcombing. Handmade dreadlocks are more presentable to others while your hair start locking by itself.

2. You only want temporary dreadlocks. A loctician can twist you hair into any dreadlock style you want. Keep in mind a twist is not a dreadlock. It's only strains of hair held together with some type of sticky chemical such as beeswax. You can change hairstyle by shampooing the wax out of your hair or untwisting the locks. However, mature dreadlocks require cutting if you want to change your hairstyle.

3. You scalp itches and you need treatment. Sometimes it's great to have a loctician shampoo and oil your hair or dreadlocks. Not only does this helps your scalp but is meditative and relaxing.

4. Remove damages caused by hair relaxers and other chemicals. You may have used chemicals in the past and need help getting your hair back to a natural state. A loctician should be able to help you accomplish this goal.

5. Want to know how many different styles of dreadlocks. You are interested in different ways people are growing dreadlocks. A loctician should have pictures of past work as well has explain each technique or process.

You do not need a loctician to grow dreadlocks, their role is to help the process and make sure you get what you want from your experience of growing dreadlocks.

When looking for a good loctician, get good referrals, ask many questions, and don't be afraid to change loctician if you are not getting the service you expect.

Let's talk about timing first. I would tell you the Absolute BEST time to stretch is between sets or exercises once your warmed up a bit. Why? First off, the muscles, and connective tissue (ligaments, tendons) are less susceptible to injury at this time. The more warmed up you are, the better the elasticity of all these things and the less risk of pulling or tearing anything. Secondly, because muscles are encased in a sheath called fascia, the muscles need to be stretched in order to give them room to grow. Basically if you can expand the sheath around the muscles, you will give the muscles a little room for grow. "Yea but i'm a woman and don't want big muscles". I know, I have heard that a thousand times. Fine, but how about increased flexibility and better recovery from workouts, as well as flushing away toxins that build up in the muscles once you comeplete an intense set?

I know that got your attention.

"Okay Brian, is there anytime NOT to stretch"? Yes, I would say three times only.

First, when IF you are going to to a maximum LIFT, ANY KIND of lift ONE time. NO STRETCHING! You will maximize lift if YOU don't. Warmup, yes, but NO STRETCHING. Second, when you have so much mobility around certain bodyparts. For example shoulders, many people I know have a great deal of range of motion in all three planes in which the shoulders move in. This may increase risk of injury is someway.

Lastly, when you get injured. Especially before you are examined by a physician or physical thrapist. They may do some different types of stretching you are not trained to do, or advise you NOT to stretch is any way.

Oh I almost forgot to mention, you can also stretch at the end of the workout as a cool down and help you with recovery time. Hold your stretches 15-30 seconds and repeat two times. When you perform each stretch, make sure you find the end point, where you feel a slight pull and little discomfort, but don't go beyond that point. Make sure to breathe normally and don't hold the breath for any length of time. This is just called a static stretch and is the most basic of all stretches, but just covering the basics is good for those of you who don't understand why you should stretch.
