Let's face it, trusting your local water filtration facility to provide clean, safe water to your home is not a smart thing to do. For example, we've all experienced a situation where we filled a glass of water from a tap just to be sickened or nauseated at the smell or taste; and bad smell and taste are just a portion of the problems. Unfortunately, no matter what water filtration system your treatment facility uses, there are a number of harms their system cannot address.Â
Water filtration is a complicated process. There have been a number of technological breakthroughs and advancements over the last several years. But, sadly most municipal treatment facilities still use an outdated water filtration system.
First, they use chlorine to "disinfect" the water, while knowing that some bacteria (cryptosporidium, for example) are resistant to chlorine. Government officials say there is no way to test for cryptosporidium in public water supplies. They also say no matter how good their water filtration system, no public treatment facility can guarantee the absence of cryptosporidium spores in the water.
Cryptosporidium spores or cysts are microscopic parasites with an outer shell that renders them impervious to chemical disinfection. Once ingested, the spores grow and reproduce in the intestinal tract causing diarrhea. Cryptosporidium infection can be deadly. Several years back, in Milwaukee, over 100 people died from the illness.Â
Children are particularly susceptible to gastrointestinal illnesses. Water for drinking or for mixing formula should always run through a home water filtration system that is certified to remove cysts.
Sadly, upgrading public treatment facilities is not something that will happen in the near future. Fortunately, there is a water filtration system for home use that can remove cryptosporidium cysts from your public water intake supply.Â
Other than the fact that chlorine disinfection is ineffective for removing cryptosporidium cysts, there are other problems with adding the chemical to the public drinking water supply. Bad taste and odor are enough to send many people looking for a home water filtration system, but let's look further at the dangers of chlorine.
A second reason your public water supply is dangerous to your health is drinking chlorinated water has been linked to cancer in a number of separate scientific studies. Showering in chlorinated water has been linked to several different types of cancer. More than 20 new cases of rectal cancer per day are blamed on chlorinated water. Only a whole house water filtration system that blocks chlorine can truly protect you.
Does anyone in your family have asthma' A third problem with chlorine disinfection is it creates chloroform gas. When the water turns to steam, chlorine is vaporized and enters the air of your home. Chloroform gas can trigger asthma attacks and irritate respiratory conditions such as bronchitis. That's why they try to use different, less irritating chemicals in indoor swimming pools.Â
The EPA believes there is a measurable level of chloroform gas in most homes around the country. They cite the cause as showering in chlorinated water. The shower is truly one source. Others include any steam source such as the dishwasher or hot water from a faucet.
The only way you can deal with it is to prevent it. You can get a shower water filtration system that blocks chlorine. They are affordably priced. When shopping around, be sure to check the performance data because some only block about 50% of the chemical for about the same price as others that block nearly all.
Protect your family from dangerous bacteria and chemicals. There is a solution. You can get a water filtration system for your home. At the very least, you need a drinking water filtration system for your kitchen tap and probably one for your shower. Your family's health depends on it.Â
