Water Supply & Sanitation

    View:
Let's face it, trusting your local water filtration facility to provide clean, safe water to your home is not a smart thing to do.  For example, we've all experienced a situation where we filled a glass of water from a tap just to be sickened or nauseated at the smell or taste; and bad smell and taste are just a portion of the problems.  Unfortunately, no matter what water filtration system your treatment facility uses, there are a number of harms their system cannot address.

Water filtration is a complicated process.  There have been a number of technological breakthroughs and advancements over the last several years.  But, sadly most municipal treatment facilities still use an outdated water filtration system.

First, they use chlorine to "disinfect" the water, while knowing that some bacteria (cryptosporidium, for example) are resistant to chlorine.  Government officials say there is no way to test for cryptosporidium in public water supplies.  They also say no matter how good their water filtration system, no public treatment facility can guarantee the absence of cryptosporidium spores in the water.

Cryptosporidium spores or cysts are microscopic parasites with an outer shell that renders them impervious to chemical disinfection.  Once ingested, the spores grow and reproduce in the intestinal tract causing diarrhea.  Cryptosporidium infection can be deadly.  Several years back, in Milwaukee, over 100 people died from the illness.

Children are particularly susceptible to gastrointestinal illnesses.  Water for drinking or for mixing formula should always run through a home water filtration system that is certified to remove cysts.

Sadly, upgrading public treatment facilities is not something that will happen in the near future.  Fortunately, there is a water filtration system for home use that can remove cryptosporidium cysts from your public water intake supply.

Other than the fact that chlorine disinfection is ineffective for removing cryptosporidium cysts, there are other problems with adding the chemical to the public drinking water supply.  Bad taste and odor are enough to send many people looking for a home water filtration system, but let's look further at the dangers of chlorine.

A second reason your public water supply is dangerous to your health is drinking chlorinated water has been linked to cancer in a number of separate scientific studies.  Showering in chlorinated water has been linked to several different types of cancer.  More than 20 new cases of rectal cancer per day are blamed on chlorinated water.  Only a whole house water filtration system that blocks chlorine can truly protect you.

Does anyone in your family have asthma'  A third problem with chlorine disinfection is it creates chloroform gas.  When the water turns to steam, chlorine is vaporized and enters the air of your home.  Chloroform gas can trigger asthma attacks and irritate respiratory conditions such as bronchitis.  That's why they try to use different, less irritating chemicals in indoor swimming pools.

The EPA believes there is a measurable level of chloroform gas in most homes around the country.  They cite the cause as showering in chlorinated water.  The shower is truly one source.  Others include any steam source such as the dishwasher or hot water from a faucet.

The only way you can deal with it is to prevent it.  You can get a shower water filtration system that blocks chlorine.  They are affordably priced.  When shopping around, be sure to check the performance data because some only block about 50% of the chemical for about the same price as others that block nearly all.

Protect your family from dangerous bacteria and chemicals.  There is a solution.  You can get a water filtration system for your home.  At the very least, you need a drinking water filtration system for your kitchen tap and probably one for your shower.  Your family's health depends on it.
Water Supply & Sanitation
They noted that improvements at drinking water treatment facilities could reduce the level of pharmaceuticals in water supply systems. The congressman said they would hold

a hearing concerning the topic.

Everyone showed concern, except some callous representatives from major providers. They simply said the public didn't need to know, because they wouldn't understand and might overreact to the news.

But, otherwise, everyone agreed that something should be done. The congressman said they would hold a hearing concerning the threat. The EPA said they knew that this issue was a major concern.

But, no one bothered to explain that people could protect their families, if they chose, too. We have the technology and in the home, it is not that expensive to use. It simply requires a sub-micron particle filter, multi-media blocks, and an activated carbon filter.

Some of us have known about pharmaceuticals in water supply systems for years. One of the most

common is estradiol, used in hormonal birth control. Only some of the hormone is absorbed. The

rest is removed along with other waste products and flushed down the drain. Only some of the hormone is absorbed by the body. The rest is ejected along with other waste products and flushed down the drain.

From there, it goes to a treatment facility. They do the minimum required by law and then dump the waters into a river. Researchers have found numerous fish downstream from these facilities with strange mutations.

Some had both male and female sex organs. Some had small heads. Others were sterile. It was learned that all of these mutations were caused by exposure to estradiol. What can the hormones and other pharmaceuticals found in water supply samples do to humans?

As usual, the greatest risk is to babies that are still developing. Scientists have shown that some of the combinations slow down the growth of human cells. Other combinations, such as the hormones increase the growth of cancerous cells.

It is interesting to note that some of the common contaminants present in tap water cause and accelerate cancer growth. If a person doesn't have a home water filtration device, not only does he have an increased risk of cancer, but if he has a tumor, it will grow faster. So, now, if a person doesn't have a home filtration device, not only does he have an increases risk of cancer, but if he has a tumor, it will grow faster.

None of this is necessary. We can remove the chemicals that cause cancer, the chlorine that tastes bad, drugs that threaten our health, the toxic metal lead and all of the other contaminants commonly found in tap-water. We just need to buy an inexpensive device and install on the faucets of our home.

That's what I'm trying to let people know. It's something that reporters never seem to say. They attract you with scary headlines about pharmaceuticals in water supply samples, then tell you there's not much of a "threat" and then leave you with no solution. Now, you know what to do.
