[D715]Dry Skin Between Toes
by John mathew, Joh

Dry skin most often occurs on the shins, hands and sides of the abdomen. It is more common during the winter months, when humidity is low. Some people also have a genetic, or hereditary, tendency to develop dry skin. In addition, elderly people tend to have more trouble with dry skin due to the natural changes in skin that occur with age Twenty percent of the population suffers from dry skin.

That is one in five people and so, yes, dry skin is quite common. Depending on which part of the world you are from, this percentage may even be greater. It is a non-specific condition, affecting people of all ages. It is not solely a problem associated with skin aging.

Dry and mature skins need to replenish low moisture reserves to address the signs of visible ageing. Replenishing the loss of sebum on the skins surface with equalising ingredients will aid hydration, supplementing dryness. Combined with regular massage, aromatherapy massage will keep your skin in tip top shape.

Dry skin has little if any shine. The skin feels rough and can be scaly. It is very sensitive and has to be carefully looked after. The lack of moisture, not skin oil, tends to cause dry skin and wrinkles. Use of oily creams is not recommended as these will prevent the skin from breathing. Chapping and cracking are signs of extremely dry, dehydrated skin.

Dry skin needs plenty of thorough but gentle cleansing, regular stimulation with massage and generous quantities of moisture. It also needs extra careful protection. Washing dry skin with soap and water not only removes grime but also the natural oils protecting the skin. A moisturizer increases the water content of the outer layers of the skin and gives it a soft, moist look.

Drinking lots of water is one remedy for dry skin, but if your skin is very dry, you may need additional help. You may have noticed that many skin care creams contain vitamins: although Vitamin E has been shown to work externally to correct dry skin, most other vitamins don't have a noticeable effect. Look for Vitamin E enriched skin creams, and increase its effects by also taking Vitamin E capsules, which help strengthen skin from the inside.

Women with dry skin should also avoid washing their faces in very hot water. Hot water will cause more drying. Warm water is advisable, and the woman should use a gentle cleanser, formulated for sensitive skin. When a woman removes her make-up, this should also be done with a gently-formulated remover and followed by gentle cleansing and moisturizing.

Moisturizing is especially important in the winter. A woman might consider carrying a travel-sized container of her favorite day moisturizer, for spot use during the day. The cheeks tend to get very dry, as does the forehead. A single dot of moisturizer on these areas can bring a great deal of comfort to tight, itchy skin.

The line between essential and non-essential nutrients used to be precise. The first criterion was based on the definition of essential – the nutrient is or is not vital. The second related to the body’s ability or inability to produce the nutrient on its own steam; if it can, the nutrient is ‘non-essential’ and if it cannot, it is ‘essential’ and must be obtained through food or supplementation. However, there is a category between the two and, in addition to topical dry skin care, you may need supplementation that you previously thought unnecessary.

The category between essential and non-essential is known as ‘conditionally essential’. It refers to nutrients that the body is inherently capable of synthesizing, but no longer being produced at all or in adequate quantities due to factors such as stress, illness or aging. Many of these nutrients are related to health factors that are important in dry skin care.

Which nutrients should concern you? Two of the most important are the amino acids cysteine and methionine. Cysteine is the amino acid in alpha-keratin, the major protein found in hair, skin and nails. It promotes collagen production and is largely responsible for skin elasticity and texture. Both methionine and cysteine are also powerful antioxidants and detoxifying agents. The body’s ability to fighting free radicals and rid the body of toxins are vital functions for dry skin care and prevention.

Cysteine is a non-essential amino acid – it can be synthesized by the body – but only with adequate quantities of methionine. As methionine production is reduced by stress, illness and aging, cysteine production also decreases.

As most dry skin is caused by loss of moisture and exposure to harsh chemicals, it is important to use a good topical dry skin treatment that keeps moisture in and chemicals out. However, if you have been under stress, ill or are getting on in years, it’s also a good idea to supplement your diet with these amino acids.
