[S632]Smoking Cessation And Copd
by Ridhdhi Desai, Rid
You might have met several people who smoke but you might have come across very few people who are trying to stop smoking. Did you ever wonder, why like this? Everyone knows that smoking is injurious to health; then why do people still smoke.

Well, this is because smoking cessation is much tougher than you can imagine. You just do not wake up one day and say, ?Alright, I won't smoke anymore.? Smoking cessation done haphazardly may hardly be successful. Only few lucky and courageous people can accomplish smoking cessation, the cold turkey way (without smoking cessation pills and drugs).

If you feel you are strong enough to go for smoking cessation without any aid, go on and try the suitable smoking cessation treatment. But if you know the perils and problems coming your way after you stop smoking, seek a cessation aid. There are many smoking cessation aids in the market, you can either buy them online or buy from a local pharmacy. However before you buy any smoking cessation pills or drugs, here is more on them.

Smoking Cessation Pill

If you want an over the counter smoking cessation pill, which can be bought without a prescription and quit smoking with its help, there are many smoking cessation pill available in the market.

Even though these smoking cessation pills are touted as safe and effective, neither their safety not efficacy is proven in clinical trials. Therefore, you cannot be hundred percent sure that these smoking cessation pills will work for you.

Smoking Cessation Treatment

Smoking cessation treatments such as nicotine replacement therapies have been used for a long time. There are many nicotine-based smoking cessation treatments namely nicotine gums, nicotine patches, nicotine inhalers, and nicotine sprays.

The main snag involved in these smoking cessation treatments is that they contain nicotine. Therefore, if you go for these smoking cessation treatments, you will be still supplying dangerous nicotine to your body. There is no point in switching from one form of nicotine to another, after all it is not the smoking itself you are addicted to but the nicotine in your cigarette.

Smoking Cessation Drug

Smoking cessation drugs such as Zyban and Champix are the best available option to stop smoking. Both Zyban and Champix are clinically tested, FDA approved, and non-nicotine smoking cessation drugs.

Though both Zyban and Champix are effective smoking cessation drugs, Zyban is not very popular in smokers due to its nasty side effects. Many people suffer from depression after they take Zyban. Also in clinical trials, it was found that Champix is two times better than Zyban and double folds your chances of success.

So decide for yourself and choose for the best possible way to give up smoking. if you wholeheartedly wish to stop smoking, go for Champix, it will make it easier for you to quit smoking by curbing nicotine cravings, fighting withdrawal symptoms and nullifying the pleasures you get from smoking.

If you wish to go for smoking cessation, help is available; it is now your call to take that help.

As more and more reports about hazards of smoking come up, we become more determined to quit smoking. However, the hurdle is that smoking cessation is easier said than done. People try all their lives before they successfully quit smoking.

Smoking effects

Smoking is the highest preventable cause of death and every year millions of people die every year because of it. Smoking not only leads to death but also diminishes the quality of life. Many smokers do realise this but they are gripped into the habit so badly that in spite of readiness to quit smoking, they are unable to give up. This is because of nicotine addiction. Many medications have surfaced in the market to help people with nicotine addiction.

Which medicines are available?

In earlier days, herbal remedies and nicotine replacement therapies were available for smoking cessation. Hypnotherapy and counselling was also available to aid smoking cessation. However, all these methods had many limitations and had a very low success rate. Nowadays, two drugs are available, Chantix and Zyban, which are touted to have a higher success rate and very few limitations.

How they work?

Nicotine replacement therapy contains nicotine and works under the theory that substituting smokers from one form of nicotine to other will help them quit smoking. However, the problem is that a person does not actually withdraw from nicotine and can experience withdrawal symptoms once he stops taking the treatment and starts smoking again.

Herbal remedies are said to contain herbs that help in smoking cessation, however the truth behind this is not yet established. Counselling and hypnotherapy answer the psychological needs but do not address the physical addiction.

Zyban works by reducing withdrawal symptoms and Chantix works by reducing withdrawal symptoms, nicotine cravings, and pleasure a smoker gets while smoking.

Ingredients of medicines

Nicotine replacement therapies contain nicotine and herbal remedies contain ancient herbs. The active ingredient in Zyban is bupropion and in Chantix is varenicline.

Side effects of medicines

Some of the side effects of nicotine replacement therapies are as dizziness, headache, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting, indigestion and palpitations.

There are not many limitations of Zyban and Chantix. The main limitation of the two new smoking cessation drugs is that they cause undesirable effects on smoker.

However, make sure you wait for at least 8 hours before you take the second dosage. The dosage should not exceed 300mg under any circumstances.

Chantix is available in 0.5mg and 1mg tablets. These tablets are color -coded white and blue for easy recognition. You should start with lower dosage and take 0.5mg dosage once a day till three days. After that, the dosage should increase to 0.5mg dosage twice a day. You should increase the dosage on the seventh day to 1mg dosage twice a day till the end of the treatment.
