[S939]Starting Your Own Website
by Matt Helphrey, Mat
It would be helpful if you have an idea or direction of what you want to do with your website! This will definitely give you a head start in promoting efforts and setting your site up. If you have no idea where to start or no experience with html or web code, no problem. Today you can find plenty of starter websites that will have everything all set up for you and if you do want to make any changes (which I do recommend) you can always learn how sometime in the near future. The only thing is, if you decide to go this route, make sure you really do your homework and research on which sites work best. There are many people out there who are more interested in taking and scamming you rather than lending you a helping hand.

If you are not scared to learn at least a tad bit of html and have an idea of what type of site you want to start, the first thing you need to do is find a reputable host for your site. There are plenty of free hosts out there but I do not recomend using these hosts because they will own your website. What I mean by that is that they don't have to charge you because advertisers pay them money to advertise on everyones site who goes through them. These hosts have been known to shut down with little or o warning and they can control the amount and flow of your traffic. Using a free host is not a good business decision and running your own website IS running your own business.

You want to find a reputtable host who has a good history with clients and allows you several options. These options include ftp options, pop mail server accounts, unlimited traffic, and a great support staff. Most decent hosting services will make you a pay a monthly or annual fee but you pay for what you get, and it is more than worth it. Many hosts will even pay you back for referring others to use their services.

Once you have your have your reputtable host selected, it's time to build your website. To help build your first website, there are plenty of helpful software all over the internet. Some are cheap or free, others can cost up to a thousand dollars or more. When first starting out I suggest you take the tougher but cheaper route and learn the html yourself. It's really not that difficult, just more tedious than anything, and it's good to know for future reference anyways. For a newbie or beginner, enrolling in a premade site may be the fastest and easiest way to go. Make sure that you sign up for a premade site that has all the training and tools you need to succeed.

The fun really begins once your site is up and running. To bring in traffic to your site you will need to learn how to write articles, start a blog, submit your site to directories, and talk with others in forums to promote your site! Checking your daily stats and watching your website grow is truly a joy to see. Eventually, if marketed correctly, the money will come with the traffic. Starting up your first website is not as hard as it may seem. Start today!

When starting a website, there are many decisions one must make in regards to both the design and the content. Who is going to design the site? Will it be you, a freelancer, or a professional corporation? As for the content, will you pay for someone to continually add content, or will you do it all yourself? After the website is built, will you be the one to promote and optimize it, or will that be outsourced as well? Obviously if you do it all yourself, the job will be much cheaper, although depending on your skills, you can probably end up with a higher quality site if you find professionals to do the work for you.

If you are starting an ecommerce site, you can save a lot of money by utilizing an open source platform, such as osCommerce. Not only are these kinds of applications free, but they are highly functional and come with a variety of options. In addition, you can find modifications for the software on the Internet, to further improve your website. Creating a website from scratch, whether you do it yourself or hire out, is either very time consuming or incredibly expensive.

Although design is important and you do not want something that looks generic, as long as you add some customization to a software supported site, you can still be unique. The back end of an ecommerce website is especially hard to code, and it can take weeks or months to perfect the code. It is simply much easier and economical to use what is already available, and the overall effect on sales will not be much different than if the site was fully customized.

Anyone will tell you that while designing the site seems like the hard part, the real challenges begin when you must start advertising the site, and bringing in visitors. There are millions of websites and billions of web pages on the Internet, so people are not going to magically flock to your site. You must offer quality content, either in the form of desired products or entertainment, and you must create a way for people to easily find you.

This can be achieved by regular advertisements, free publicity, or search engine optimization. While advertising is immediately cheaper, it only yields temporary results, while search engine optimization lasts for a long time and attracts higher quality visitors, as unlike advertising, these prospects are actively looking for you. Just like with the design of the site, you have to make the decision of whether to optimize yourself or have a company do it. For most people, the best route to take is a mix of do-it-yourself and professional assistance.

You would probably want help with directory submissions because doing those yourself is tedious and time consuming, while (depending on your skill level) you can handle keyword research and on page optimization yourself. It is not always necessary that you pay for help, and if you look in the right places, you can find people who are willing to give you advice for free. As always, you want to do as much as you can yourself to cut down on costs, but for the things that you absolutely cannot do alone, it is okay to get outside help.
