Interesting Things To Do
Gen Wright
Gozo is one of the islands that comprise the Maltese archipelago at the Mediterranean Sea. The island is famed for its unique character because of its rich history and various places of interest. Some of these famous places are the Ggantija Neolithic temples, which are considered as the oldest man-made structure, and the Calypso Cave, the cave that Homer referred to in his Odyssey.
The island of Gozo has one city, the city of Victoria, which is also the island's capital. Victoria is a famous tourist spot because of its rich Baroque architecture and history that reportedly dates back to the Bronze Age. The city's Citadel, the historic fortified castle that lies in the heart of Victoria.
Gozo also has small villages like Ghajnsielem and Xaghra and towns that are mainly inhabited during the summer as summer residences like Marsalforn and Xlendi. The latter two towns, since they are mostly occupied during the summer, are usually uninhabited for the rest of the year.
There are many things to see and do while you are on your trip to Gozo. One of the island's finest beaches is the Ramla il-Hamra Literally means red sands, Ramla Bay is famed for its brilliant reddish-orange sand and clear bluish green waters. What's best here is that despite of its fame, the beach is not crowded. Another beautiful beach in the island is the San Blas, which is a favorite spot for snorkeling.
If you're in Gozo, one of the must-see places is the rotunda church in Xewkija village. Built in the honor of St. John the Baptist, the church is the largest one in Gozo. If you don't like churches, try visiting the Inland Sea, the Azure Window, and the Blue Hole for a magnificent view of Gozo's west coast.
The Azure Window is a cliff with a hole in the middle, while the Inland Sea is a small lake connected to the sea by a 20-meter tunnel through the cliffs. The Inland Sea has been spared from commercial development and is practically untouched, making it a very beautiful place to swim. The Blue Hole is not exactly a geological blue hole but it is still a remarkable diving spot. The Blue Hole also won awards as one of Europe's premier diving spots, albeit being one of the most expensive water activities in the country. It is worth it, though, for the underwater sea life Gozo is very beautiful and interesting.
If you are planning to go around Gozo for a day, it is highly recommended that you spend the morning at the Citadella of Victoria, have lunch at the nearby quaint cafes the line the city, and spend the afternoon at one of the best beaches in the island, the Ramla il-Hamra or at the Inland Sea for a quick swim and to enjoy the waters of Malta.
If you're visiting for two days, you can spend the following morning at the Ggantija temples and have lunch at Xaghra's beautiful central square, and visit the remaining swimming spots of the island in the afternoon.
