Most conversations are filled with a lot of sentences that shouldn't be interpreted literally. It is better if you can write down at least 10 foreign colloquial terms and its corresponding meaning in your own native language. Keep a journal containing these exercises until such time that you can actually write complete paragraphs containing common conversational sentences.

Knowing the foreign equivalent of"Which way to the train station" and "Where is the nearest taxi/cab stand" will come in handy. It is also best to keep a pocket dictionary of the language you are trying to learn if you have to visit that particular country. While there, try picking up some simple words by listening intently to native speakers when they speak to you in their language.
