There are plenty of people out there that prefer text to get their information however it cannot be denied that video is on the rise. This is mainly because a lot of people would rather watch a video than sit and read a long page of text. The question is how do you do it right?
The first thing to remember is that if your video is not of high quality it will likely put people off and reduce the chance of you converting that visitor. It is important to ensure that there is value in your video and so that visitors to your site get use out of it. If not they will feel they have wasted their time and that is your fault. This is likely to put them off your business, products and services.
Also as mentioned before video is not for everyone and so it is important to add quality text to your site to go alongside your videos. This will enable those people who do not want to watch a video to still get the information they need. If you do not include this you are potentially alienating a portion of the market you may want to get.
When making your video, consider the length. The last thing people want to do is sit there and watch a video that lasts for 30 or 40 minutes. Chances are they will switch off before they get your message. If you have a lot of information, consider breaking it down into chunks and creating several videos between 5 and 10 minutes in length. You will then need to make sure you give them appropriate titles so visitors know what they are about. This will enable them to watch one and come back to watch another when they have more time.
Again on the length point, try to be concise. If you can get your point across in 2 minutes don't extend your video to 5 minutes and pad it out. Make sure you people will not get bored with waffle and padding.
One of the advantages of video is it engages your visitors in a greater way then text. We all know that the best way to convert a sale is to sit down face to face with your potential client. Using a video is the closest thing you can get to a face to face meeting with your visitors. The more a potential client thinks they engage with you and you engage with them the greater the chance of a conversion. For that reason, well made videos will increase your chance of conversion over a competitor who does not use any video.
The other thing to consider when adding video to your website is search engine rankings. It is being shown in Google, even now that videos with quality tags are likely to come up higher in the rankings than a text article. So if you have almost equal quality text to a competitor but you have a video then your website might come up higher. Part of the reason for this is that Google see video as more engaging than text and so think it will give a better user experience and so rank it higher.
If you think about all of the above how can you afford not to have video on your website?
