A deck can be left open, but if so, there is always the danger of someone falling over the deck. If you live in the house, and you are familiar with the surroundings, this is unlikely to happen. However, not everyone knows the house as well as you do. For example, you may have guests in your house, and some guests like to wander off by themselves. If lighting is not adequate, they may fall off the deck and hurt themselves.

You can mix and match different styles and designs until you get something that you really like. Ultimately, the railings must be something you really feel comfortable with. That's because when you really think about it, you may actually be spending a lot of time on the deck. So having something that pleases you will really help you enjoy the time you spent on your deck.
You may be spending time on your deck with guests, enjoying a drink and just catching up with one another. Or you may be spending time on the deck by yourself, just lazing around and reading your favorite book. For whatever the reason, the deck offers some form of privacy for you and your guests.

Since you are expecting to spend a lot of time on the deck, it is comforting to know that the railings provide some form of privacy. If you prefer more privacy, you can also choose deck railings that expose less of your deck.
