Whether you are thinking about entering into a course on computer programming or you simply want to know what a friend or family member is doing with their degree, you will find that there are a few basic things that you need to understand when it comes to computer programming. First, remember that computer programming can also be known as programming or coding, and that the most basic level, it has to do with the process of writing, testing, debugging and/or maintaining the code of a computer program.
One of the things to think about when looking into the idea of taking up a career in computer programming is that there are a large number of different programming languages which are in use in the field. Depending on your particular area of interest, different languages may be of more or less use for you. In many cases, computer programming jobs involve working with pre-existing code (called legacy code by programmers), largely in maintenance or altering old code for new functionality.
Computer programming can be looked at as a bit of engineering, a bit of craft and some art as well. A truly talented programmer will employ all three disciplines in the course of their computer programming work. Good computer code is a subjective thing, but generally speaking, good code is that which is efficient and can easily be added to.
Computer programmers look at the following criteria when creating software. The first is typically performance - essentially, how quickly the program runs and the amount of system resources the program uses while running. Second is reliability - does the program consoistently do what it is supposed to do? Next is robustness - this measures how well the code deals with data conflicts and other unexpected situations. Usability is next; this refers to how easy the software is for the end user to operate. Then last is portability; this refers to the number of different machines and operating systems can successfully run the software.
If you are in a place where you are looking to make sure that you can get the right kind of work for yourself, or if you are looking to see what computer programming might be able to offer you, make sure that you take a look at this discipline and figure out what your options are. There are definitely people who are perfect for this field and who don't even know it, and you will find that with just a little bit of careful thought and examination that you will be able to decide if it is for you.
