Variable voltage transformer is a great device for enjoying constant voltage output. Generally, variable voltage transformer has a single layer of winding on a steel core. A special contact surface with carbon brush is made on one side of the winding. This carbon brush is made to touch the winding with the help of a contact arm. The carbon brush taps off the voltage(ranging from zero to 100%) across the winding depending on its position. Simple to operate, variable voltage transformer provides constant voltage supply. The amount of voltage transformed depends on the type of variable transformer used.

Some of the common types of variable transformers are Single phase variable transformer, Three phase variable transformer, motorised variable transformer, open type variable transformer and enclosed variable transformer. Variable voltage transformers have wide application. It is generally used for voltage adjustment and voltage control in various development work. Variable voltage transformer is used for testing voltage of electronic appliances, controlling heat of ovens and heaters, testing voltmeters and other meters. Variable voltage transformer is also used to effectively control lighting in public places like theaters, hotels and restaurants.

Another type of commonly used voltage transformers are high voltage transformers, low voltage transformers, Electric transformers, Current transformers and Isolation transformers. High voltage transformers are capable to step up low voltage to very high voltage. Also known as power transformers, high voltage transformers work with high voltages. They are generally used in high voltage circuits, industrial and other technical applications. Low voltage transformer is available in the standard voltage range of 12 to 234 volts. It is a popular kind of voltage transformer as it reduces any kind of risks related to electric shocks.

Electric transformer transfers current from one circuit to another with the help of electromagnetic induction. This voltage transformer also provides current effectively and efficiently. Current transformer gets current from the secondary circuit and supplies current directly. It also helps in measuring the alternate current with the help of the conductor.

Isolation transformer supplies current from one circuit to another circuit by decoupling two circuits. Isolation transformer is used to supply current for equipments. Since this voltage transformer is designed to meet various requirements, it suits wide applications.
