Many people think that they can insert certain keywords in META tags, if these keywords are the ones that they need to rank up, and this will give you high search engine ranking, this is not truly right and not that simple, this can be an abuse.

They use powerful keywords into their META keyword tags that nothing has related to their content; some engines still index sites with these words in their META tags.

This is a legitimate technique, this is like a help to ?spiders? in search engines to explain what is the site about, what content is displayed on your website, this could be a good technique, if you don't abuse of it, this is not some technique that give you the best rankings, by itself, but certainly you can use it with some other techniques that forms a group of techniques to improve your site ranking, like we said this is part of SEO, and this part with another will give you an optimized page.

To create your META tags consider the following points:

?Good and relevant keywords.

?These keywords have to be related to your site content.

?Make your title using same keywords

?Meta description tag is good to marketing sentence, put attention in the content that you want here, this could be used by some search engines

If you repeat your keywords in your META tags, would be the same as repeating your keywords in your content, this is not helpful for Google ranking, this is another technique considered like spamming and this could hurt your ranking.

Recommendations:

?Your keywords META doesn't exceed 950 characters including spaces.

?Your META Description doesn't exceed 240 characters.

?Try to include at the beginning of the Description most important keywords.

?Include 3 or 4 of keywords phrases that you consider important in your description.

?To include plural and single keywords in your searches, use both keywords.

?Don't repeat too much, this could hurt your site ranking.

The Myths in META Tags

1) The Description is not important, Google don't use it 90 % of the time.

Google generates a page snippet comprising the parts of actual page content. Therefore this should be available, a relevant DMOZ Description is used. There are instances when Google use a supplied Website Description tag. Also, many other search engines make use of the Description tag.

2) Keywords in META tag must be separated by commas.
