Many Internet Marketers overlook the opportunity of creating strong emotional responses from their readers. A lot of times, the text is too formal and direct and does nothing but present a boring claim. There is no internal interest, maybe a little curiosity, but not enough energy to motivate your reader to respond, other than closing your website.
Do you have a thorough understanding of your particular market? What are their fears; desires; motivators; turn offs; or topics that stir some kind of emotional response. Take making money online, these people are looking for financial freedom and independence.
However, you never exactly know what their intentions are for desiring such changes. That is a key reason why you see other marketers plastering pictures of their new cars; homes; and vacations they have taken. Depending on the person, these pictures either inspire people to take action because they would like to do the same, or reinforce the fear of never being successful. Either way you are building some type of personal connection: Love or Hate!
I do not have a personal website myself (yet), but I do write a lot of articles and most of them take a neutral stance. I try not to remind my readers of their fears, because I am pretty sure they do that plenty times enough throughout the day.
Instead, I try to be playful... something society tries so hard to ignore once you reach adulthood. There is an overall attitude of being serious, but life is an adventure and the best way I know to create rapport is to be spontaneous; creative; and fun!
For example, what were things you enjoyed as a kid? What games did you play? What cartoons did you watch? Could you use those same concepts in marketing? YES! Geico does it all the time and are very good at it.
I created an article for affiliate marketers (newbies or experienced) titled, "Red Light Green Light Affiliate Marketing." Now what does that do for you or your readers? Most people as kids have played or heard of that game, so it creates an internal interest that can not be resisted (rapport).
But how did I turn that into a nifty marketing technique?
Here is a snippet:
"For every program that test positive for your list, draw a green dot in that row, in that particular column. If the program tests negative, then draw a red dot.
After you have finished, look at your list and see which affiliate programs have out performed the others - more green dots than red dots. The one's with the most green dots, are you green light affiliate programs or the one's you might want to begin promoting first. The red lights, are the one's with the most red dots, and might be the one's you get rid of altogether or test them out lastly."
Look how simple that is and sounds! But you know what? It works, and very well so! People love the concept and idea, they have fun reading the article and this builds that trust; or rapport if you will. Some of the greatest ideas are the simplest ideas.
