Removing Oil Based Paint
Kurt Schefken
Oil-based paints should be used for painting projects. Finding out how to change the colors in your house should be one of those projects that is fairly simple. The best way to embark on painting your home is to first learn a few things about the paints that are available. There are two types that can be used. There are water latex based and oil based. The type that you choose to use should be based on what you are painting. Use oil based types when you are painting trims, high traffic areas or doors.
Oil based products can be more challenging to work with because they are thicker than water based ones. Different brushes are used for the two different types of paints and when painting with oil based ones you should have good ventilation to due to the strong smell it has. You can find oil based products anywhere and just about every color you can imagine is available.
Oil based products are compiled of resin and oil and they are referred to as solvents. Before you begin painting with them you need to apply a coat of primer to the wall to prevent the paint from peeling later on. Primer is also easy to find and it can be sprayed on or painted. If you have a dark paint, tint the primer before painting.
To figure out if you are painting over a wall that has oil based product on the wall, test it with water. Water will not be absorbed when it is applied to a wall that has oil based paint on it. When you are painting with oil based paint your should be on the lookout for bubbles. It is not a good idea to shake oil based paint although stirring is a good idea. Begin with one coat of paint and allow time for it to dry. Expect a longer wait than you would have with latex paint. Keep the good ventilation that you had when painting after you are done.
Oil based paints are toxic chemicals. There are proper ways to throw out the unused portion. Use these paint with care.
Some of the projects that oil based products will work well with are trims, doors and decorating projects. Indoor trim like beard board, trim around doors, crown molding and chair rails are good items to paint with oil based paints. These areas are high traffic and oil based types are sturdier than latex ones. It also is simpler to cleanse than other paint.
Indoor and outdoor doors typically are painted with oil based paints because it can be cleans so easily. Fingerprints, dirt and smudges can be removed without much effort.
