When you are in desperate need to remove water from your home you must remember to do it quickly but not too quickly as it could cause additional problems. Basements that have flooded tend to have their surrounding areas flooded too including the outside area and under the walls of your basement. If you remove the water too quickly it could collapse the supporting walls and other areas. Also, before you ever decide to go into a flooded basement make sure that all electricity that goes into your basement has been shut off or you could find yourself electrocuted.

Pump water out of your basement when you are positive that any water on the outside of your home is no longer there. That allows you to remove the water from your basement safely.

For those people that are utilizing a pump that is powered with gasoline or any other water removal emergency generator, please ensure that these devices are located on the outer areas of your home in well-ventilated area as if "outside" so you can reduce any chance of carbon monoxide poisoning.

After you've begun the process of water removal with the sump pump, stop periodically to ensure that water is not leaking back into your basement. You would be wasting your time by pumping the water out just to have it flow back. Even then it could take many days to complete the entire water removal process. Especially when you're always watching to see that the water is no longer leaking in.

To check to see if the water is still leaking back to the basement, place a mark on your wall where the water level is and if it the water rises above it will indicate that water is indeed flowing back in. If it doesn't rise then you can continue with the water removal. When and if the water does rise you should leave it and watch it for a little while longer after placing an additional mark to determine if it is still rising.

Water removal can be a very lengthy process so be very patient with it. If you don't have the time to do it, hire someone who does. If you rush the process of water removal you could find yourself getting into more trouble such as an increase for the potential of a basement cave in or major cracks developing in the walls. All this you want to avoid.

No one ever wants to experience a leak in his or her home, but it does tend to happen if you have an old home. When you must take part in water removal just follow the above guidelines and everything will be a lot less stressful then they already are.
