Santa
Anurag
Santa was given his name by a Dutch man called Sinster Klass although traditionally his character was based upon a man
called Saint Nicholas of Myra who was a Greek Christian bishop during the 4th century. Nicholas came bearing gifts for
the poor to a father of three daughters who were going to become prostitutes unless a dowry was paid.
Today the modern image of Santa is recognised throughout the world with his red and white suit, black boots and belt. He
is said to be a really jolly man with a loud laugh and a kind face. This image of Santa was created in America during the
19th century. Santa's look has somewhat evolved through the introduction of cartoons and cartoonists.
We think of Santa at Christmas as he is the Christmas emblem. Children believe that Santa spends all year making toys
with his elf helpers to deliver them on Christmas eve to all the good boys and girls of the world. We ask the kids to
make a list and post it to the North Pole so that Santa knows what
Christmas Gifts to bring, he also appears at several
locations throughout the country before Christmas day so that little children can have a chance to ask Santa personally
for Christmas presents.
It is also said that Santa Delivers the presents down the chimney and places them under the Christmas tree, this
traditional story has been adapted to seem more life-like as often houses no longer have chimney tops for Santa to
squeeze through so another adopted myth is that he has a special key to the house so that he can get in when everyone is
in bed.
The Santa theme comes in many forms whether it be through Christmas movies that are shown around cinema's or on Christmas
cards. You will also find him displayed on Chocolate Advent Calendars, Christmas cards, television adverts and when its
time to put the Christmas decorations up Santa can be displayed as a candle on the mantelpiece or as chocolate tree
decorations for the kids to devour or a Santa shaped stocking can be placed at the bottom of their bed to be filled with
little Christmas treats.
Santa costumes are popular at the corporate Christmas party where often the boss will dress up and hand out gifts to all
his colleagues. And at kids Christmas parties Santa will always certainly make and appearance.
