Encouragement should be given by the family and friends to encourage the individual to seek treatment and to continue practicing and learning to cope with the techniques that one has been given in psychotherapy in solving one's problems.

It is essential that you see that your loved one is evaluated and treated by a mental health professional.
As a loved one that cares, you should learn to educate oneself in mental health problems and depression. This tends to help families and friends in to understand what their loved one is experiencing.
Be available for continuous support. This has been known to drain individual's , especially if the depression lasts for a period of time. You need to keep thinking that you are reaching out in support to see that your loved one has a successful treatment. One's suffering from depression tend to isolate oneself. Your support is critical in their recovery.
Help in very way to see that the one suffering from depression sticks to a treatment plan. This may mean seeing that the individual takes their prescribed medication and getting them to their therapy sessions . You can offer your help in helping the individual to change one's lifestyle and to keep follow up appointments with their healthcare physician. Treatment, at times has to be adjusted for individual's suffering from depression.

If you are living with an individual that suffers from depression, it can become very difficult and stressful for families and friends. These are some tips that seem to make it more beneficial and easier in handling a depressed individual.
Learn to recognize that depression can and is often hostile ; irritable; and full of rejection.
Try an interaction in style where the sufferer is the one in charge. Instead of you making the suggestions , give the individual suffering from depression a chance to choose what they would like to do. (Example: Going to the movies. Let the depressed one choose which movie to watch.)
Make plans to accompany and encourage your loved one . Let it be known that you are there for him/her. Always encourage your loved one to seek professional help.
Inform your loved one that treatment can be very effective and will have him/her feeling better in just a short time.
Perhaps your loved one should be rewarded with being able to go out and visit friends or participate in special family activities. Don't never force the issue of interaction.
Be genuine about your feelings toward your loved one.
Always plan on time for yourself. Taking breaks from your loved one that is suffering will help both of you.
It is often suggested that family may want to enter therapy in bringing together all the loved ones that tend to be affected by the depression and learn how to cope better in handling the welfare of their loved one.
