Guide to Getting a Moving Estimate

By: Asha

Have to move? Not yet decided about the mover? Need guidelines to getting a moving estimate? Read on.

Types of Estimates

The mover may prescribe a time dependent hourly rate based on his previous jobs. This price list may be suitable for local moves. But this does not hold good for long distance moving.

"Not to exceed" estimate which is binding only on the mover is very much suitable for long distance moving. In this the final price can not exceed the maximum limit agreed by the mover. If the move costs less you just pay the lesser amount. Sounds cool, isn't it?

This type of binding estimate is done based on the list of items which actually would have moved. But if you decide bringing some extra items in the last minute mover may charge you more depending on whether the final prices exceeds the "Not to exceed limit" or not. Despite this aspect, the

"Not to exceed" estimate is very popular. Even movers recommend this.

You might have given all the information to the mover with utmost sincerity. But for some reason or other, if at all it becomes apparent that the actual move may exceed the MAX limit, the mover may look for other ways. They may do the packing improperly and wish for the undesired. Keep an eye open for this.

Practical Tips

&bullConsider only licensed and insured movers
&bullGet moving estimates from as many movers as possible. It is always nice to have choices to decide upon. Naturally high estimates are to be eliminated. Even the much lesser ones have to be double checked.
&bullLet the mover come and see what actually has to be moved. Show every thing-the closets, the garage, garden shed, attic, and basement-you intend to move to the mover. Moving estimates given over phone or the internet are not that much accurate and reliable.
&bullGet the moving estimates in writing
&bullAsk for insurance. It is a mover's legal responsibility to provide you insurance. Movers obviously will vie for weight dependent minimal coverage for your items. You should try to get best coverage. Be aware that only visible damages are considered while giving insurance. If internal electronics components of your, say, TV, is not okay, this will not be accommodated under minimal coverage.
&bullBasic insurance by the movers will usually not cover the replacement cost of highly expensive items. In such cases you need to purchase extra valuation or insurance. Get this clarified by your mover.

For local moves, where time is important and not the distance, unbinding hourly rate is the customary one.

All said and done don't give in to the temptation of deciding on moving estimate alone. The reputation of the mover is an important aspect to be considered before deciding finally.

So, let's move, shall we not?
