[T990]To Clean Granite Counters
by Dror Klar, Dro
There are a number of different materials that you can use to make your new kitchen or bathroom counters with, but one of the hottest items selling for this use is granite. Even though other materials like tile, laminate, and other engineered stone are available, granite is the material that is being pushed the most heavily by mainstream home improvement networks.

It is marketed as a fresh, modern material that most people can afford to have if they can afford a kitchen renovation. There are a number of reasons to choose granite or not choose it, depending on your situation.

Granite is an expensive material. If you have a small kitchen, you may be able to afford this material more than if you have a large kitchen. A kitchen with 90 square feet of counter space will cost you thousands of dollars if you wish to choose granite for the countertop material.

Granite tiles are available instead of slabs and while these are cheaper, they are harder to keep clean and taken care of than slab granite.

One thing you should seriously consider when you choose granite is leaving the installation of it to the professionals. These people know what they are doing (hopefully) and if not, they are responsible for messing up your granite and will be obligated to pay for it. Let them take the measurements and cut the granite, because they have experience, whereas you probably do not. Remember, once it is cut, it is cut.

A drawback of natural stones like granite is the fact that they are porous and need to be sealed and re-sealed over time to make sure that they do not stain very easily. You will need to re-seal the granite yourself at least once a year, if not once every six months. This is not hard and for the look the granite will give to your kitchen, it will be worth it.

When you do decide to purchase a slab of granite for your kitchen, go and see it first. Do not purchase natural stone like this online or without seeing it, because you may not be getting what you think. Remnant pieces are sometimes really good buys, since these are leftovers from other jobs.

Stores will sometimes give you the remnant pieces if you pay for the labor. The only thing about budget or remnant granite pieces is you might not be able to get the color, pattern, or amount that you need.
