[P555]Post Menopausal Weight Gain
by Francine Cook, Fra
Menopause brings with it quite a few changes to a woman; it is the end of the possibility of bearing children, but the beginning of a whole new part of your life. If you have taken good care of yourself in the years prior to menopause this will pay dividends for you now as your body will maintain stronger bones and muscles to keep your health up during these middle years of your life.

The usual and very natural weight gain for pre-menopausal women is sometimes unnerving, but it is simply due to the body not needing as many calories to maintain itself. Even though quite a few will try to manage this weight gain with diet and/or exercise, it can be a frustrating process. A better solution is often sought after.

Losing weight at any age is a challenge, but it can be even more difficult during menopause. That's not to say that it can't be done! You should focus on a healthy diet rather than starving yourself, and give your body all of the rich nutrients that it needs. If you are eating nutrient-dense natural foods, you will need to concentrate less on counting calories, and your weight will naturally even out.

One of the best ways to prevent menopause weight gain is to maintain your muscle mass. Women can lose about one-third of a pound of muscle every year after their thirties. When you maintain or increase your muscle mass, your body is better able to metabolize the food you put into it, which can help to keep you at a healthy weight.

An exercise routine is an extra that can aid both your mood and help relieve stress, both of which are crucial elements to those suffering from the effects of menopause. There are studies that indicate a link between stress and weight gain during menopause, and this may be increased during post-menopause. Maintaining your health with regular exercise routines can help calm stress, as well as burn calories.

Although you might not want to gain five to ten extra pounds, it might actually be beneficial to your health if you are a menopausal woman. As long as you are still within the recommended weight range for your size, that few extra pounds may reduce some of the symptoms associated with the hormonal changes your body is undergoing. While it is never a good idea to eat unhealthy and become obese, menopause might be a good time to take a break from your diet and just enjoy being yourself.
