While some people enjoy a quick trip in the air, others may prefer to hit the open road and enjoy the ride. If you are going to drive to your new home, it is important to have your vehicle serviced before the long trip. Let your mechanic know what your plans are so she can carefully check and prepare your vehicle for the voyage. When you arrive at your new destination, find a new mechanic and have your car serviced again to assure that the long trip didn't damage it.
Journey preparations
You may be moving from LA to NY or vice versa, but either way you will be traveling about 3000 miles, and that involves preparation. Plan out your route on a map and if time allows, use this opportunity as a family trip.
You can turn the trip into an adventure by planning with family where you will sleep, what national parks you may want to visit, what cities you will drive through and how many days will you stay in each location. During this planning process mark the important spots on your route such as gas stations, hospitals, mechanic shops, hotels, motels, and restaurants or diners.
Not done with packing yet?
If you haven’t finished the packing yet and you feel that time is running short, you might consider asking some friends, family, and neighbors to help. Be sure to label boxes with their contents and instructions or warnings, such as "fragile", "this side up", etc. Some people mark each box with a number and a color, which helps the movers identify where the box is coming from and where it should go in the new house.
Any organized moving company will provide an inventory list as part of their service. They will construct and keep a detailed inventory list including the contents of each box. It’s important to ask for a copy of the list before your movers leave.
