As may Americans that can say they have heard the Dixie Chicks can say they have also heard of their controversy. Dixie Chicks is a country trio comprised of Emily Robison, Martie Maguire, and Natalie Maines.

Formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas the band would achieve stardom in the mid to late 90’s origionaly consisted of Martie Erwin, Emily Erwin, Laura Lynch, and Robin Lynn Macy. The founding members all graduated from Greenhill school in Addison Texas.

Dixie Chicks began largely in Bluegrass and released their first album Thanks Heavens for Dale Evans, which won them local success. However their major success would come five years latter with the group reformed consisting of Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire, and Emily Robison and the song Wide Open Spaces. The Dixie Chicks proved their right to stardom with such follow up successes as albums such as Fly with songs Cowboy Take me Away and Without You. However

In 2003 before the Iraq Invasion Natalie Maines said during a concert “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas." After her quote reaches the media, she came under criticism for three reasons, first they said she shouldn’t criticize a nation’s leader while on foreign soil, second she should criticize a countries military leader before a war, and third she shouldn’t make political statements that might upset their politically conservative base.

Despite the controversy over the group’s political statements, their Top of the World Tour still made headlines and was a success.
