Build A Model Plane
Victor Epand
Flying model planes is not just about using a remote control to get the plane in the air and to land later. There are many things involved and, most of the time, training is needed before one can start flying these models. Since these planes can cause accidents if not controlled well, or may encroach on people's property or even lives, it is important to know what the law says about flying them. It is advisable to join model plane flying clubs that are near you, since you can get valuable guidance there on how to go about this hobby.
Before you can start flying your model, there are certain things you should check. First, ensure the plane is well fitted. For example, check that the wings are tightly fitted. Check also that the remote control device has fully charged batteries and the plane engine is well fueled. The control parts should turn easily and servos should be receiving signal inputs effectively.
If you are a beginner, it is advisable to buy a two-channel plane and make sure that no other people are flying on the same frequency as you near by. Always test your plane before flying it and don't fly it near people or objects, initially.
Once you are ready to fly, you should start by taxi testing your plane to get used to the controls of the plane. Once you feel you are ready for a take off, run your plane on the runaway and once it's on full throttle, you can get it airborne. Some models will just lift once on full throttle. In case the plane leans to the left before take off, trim it by moving the rudder a little to the right.
Once the plane is airborne, you can turn it to the direction you want by use of ailerons. Apply the left or right ailerons to turn the plane to about 20 degrees and then bring it around by applying elevator. Keep adding the throttle slightly as you do this.
Once your model is in flight, you should control with light application, to maintain the altitude. To bring it to land, you should first maintain the altitude and gradually reduce the plane's ground speed as you increase its air speed. This will bring it low towards the runaway, but raise the nose slightly high as it descends, to reduce the speed and prevent the model from bouncing back. Once the plane touches the runaway, cut the throttle and elevator, but control the rudder until it comes to a stop.
You are now an expert! But it is still advisable to consider the experiences of flying club members or by training with flight stimulators.
