The first thing you need to do is keep dirt and dust from entering your home as much as possible. Have a good track off mat at your front door both on the outside and on the inside. This will help trap soil before it gets into your home. If possible, make people take there shoes off when they enter your home.
Next you should try to get as much dust out of the air as possible before it can settle. Invest in a good pleated air filter or even better an electrostatic filter for your homes HVAC system. Change or clean it often. If you want to go one step further, buy a HEPA air cleaner and place it in your heaviest traffic room.
Next you need to clean the area where dust settles often. The two areas where most dust will settle is your carpet and your furniture. Vacuum them a couple times a week with a good vacuum with a HEPA filter. Have your homes carpet cleaned every 6 months as well to keep it from becoming a dust problem. You might think that getting rid of the carpet will solve this problem entirely but think again. Carpet is a filter which holds the dust and keeps it out of the air. Removing it will cause even more trouble.
These few simple tricks should help you keep dust under control in your home. You might never get rid of it but you can keep it away longer. Good luck.
