With the near infrared interactance fiber optic probe is attached to a digital analyzer which measures the tissue composition and can measure the fat and water content in various parts of the body. The most common body part on which this near infrared interactance methodology is used is the biceps for estimating body fat using the NIR method. The NIR light goes through the tissues and is reflected off the bone back to the detector. The NIR data is entered into a prediction equation with the person's height, weight, frame size, and level of activity to estimate the percent body fat.
