A loading dock leveler is an important part of any dock area, and will make a big difference to how easy it is for your staff to load and unload trucks. Getting materials loaded quickly and efficiently without damaging them is essential, and there are a number of ways that a leveling system will help you to achieve your goals.

Trucks come in many different sizes and the height of their trailers can be very different, which means that when they arrive at the dock thee could be a significant difference between the level of the dock and the trailer. A loading dock leveler uses a hydraulic ram to raise a platform in order to meet with the level of the truck in order to provide a smooth transition from one surface to another.

The operation of a loading dock leveler is simple and requires only a single button to set up. The operator simply presses the button to raise the ramp to its maximum height at which point a lip extends to bridge the gap between the deck and the truck. The leveler then descends to rest on the load bed to provide a smooth transition that will allow your staff to roll goods on and off the truck easily.

The most important factor that you need to consider when choosing a loading dock leveler for your business is to ensure that the unit you choose offers enough weight capacity to allow for all of the goods that you are working with to be loaded and unloaded safely. Most companies offer a large selection of different units that are specially designed to operate properly with loads of up to 80,000 pounds.

There are a number of different systems that underpin a standard loading dock leveler including systems that are automatically activated when the truck pulls up, as well as those that require a push button operation. The advantage of a truck actuated system are that it is basically self sufficient, and ensures that whenever you need it, it simply works and then returns to normal after use to allow for cross traffic to pass through the area without impairment.

The lowering systems on all the models offered by some companies include all the necessary safety refinements to prevent injuries occurring if a worker gets part of their body trapped under the platform. The systems automatically stop the leveler from returning to the lower position, and thus prevent accidents.

Choosing a loading dock leveler from most companies is simple, and they offer a comprehensive range of these essential systems that will ensure you get the best model for your budget and requirements. It is important that your chosen system is the right size for your dock, offers sufficient load capacity to enable it to operate, and is safe. You will also need to ensure that the system you opt for is regularly maintained, but as long as a loading dock leveler is used in accordance with the guidelines that are set out in the manual, there is no reason why your unit will not provide you with years of helpful service in your loading area.
