A storage device, also called a secondary storage device, is used to store instructions, data, and information when they are not being used in memory. For common types of stores devices are magnetic disk, optical disks, tape, and miniature mobile storage media.

Magnetic Disks

magnetic disks use magnetic particles to store items such as data, instructions, and information on a disks surface. before any data can be read from it or written on the magnetic disks, the disc, must be formatted. Formatting is the process of dividing the disc into tracts and sectors, so the computer can locate the data, instruction, and information on the disc. A track is a narrow recording band that forms a full circle on the surface of the disk.

The disc storage locations consist of pie shaped sections, which break the tracks into small arcs called sectors. On a magnetic disk, a sectors typically stores up to 512 bytes of data. Three types of magnetic disks or floppy disk, zip disk and hard disks.some of these discs are portable, others are not.
