Data Types Oracle

By: Jesse Miller

Each literal or column value manipulated by oracle has a data type. A value`s data type associates a fixed set of properties with the value. These properties cause Oracle to treat values of one data type differently from values of another. Values can be added to NUMBER data type but not values of RAW data type.

VARCHAR can be defined as a Variable-length character string having maximum length size bytes. Maximum size is 4000, and minimum is 1. Size should be specified for a VARCHAR2. Variable-length character string has maximum length size characters or bytes, depending on the choice of national character set.

Maximum size is determined by the number of bytes required to store each character, with an upper limit of 4000 bytes. Size should be specified for NVARCHAR2. Numbers should have precision p and scale a. The precision p can range from 1 to 38.

The scale s can range from 84 to 127.It is represented as NUMBER (p, s). Long can represent character data of variable length up to 2 gigabytes. Valid date ranges from January 1, 4712 BC to December 31, 4712 AD. This date ranges are defined in the command DATE. RAW can support raw binary data of length size bytes. Maximum size which can be assigned is 2000 bytes.

Size should be specified by the RAW. LONG RAW supports raw binary data of variable length up to 2 gigabytes. Hexadecimal string represents the unique address of a row in its table. This data type is primarily for values returned by the ROWID pseudo column. CHAR supports fixed length character data of length size bytes. Maximum sizes which char supports are 2000 bytes.

Default and minimum size assigned by CHAR is1 byte. NCHAR supports fixed length character data of length size characters or bytes. Depending on the choice of national character set. Maximum size is determined by the number of bytes required to store each character, with an upper limit of 2000 bytes. Default and minimum size is 1 character or 1 byte, depending on the character set.

CLOB is defined as a character large object containing single-byte characters. Variable-width character sets are not supported. Maximum size is 4 gigabytes. NCLOB is defined as a character larger object containing fixed width multi byte characters.
