By: Sam Ness

Counseling is undergoing its rebirth process, in the 21st century American society.

From the old days of benevolent organizations-based counseling services, through the government-sponsored charity support lines, right to the contemporary specialized counseling that covers all major areas of life.

Consumer credit and debt counseling, marriage and career counseling, even anger counseling are all new services answering the needs of millions Americans.

As the pace of life accelerates, so does the demand for counseling services from those who are finding it difficult to lead a “normal" life.

Stressful work environment, challenges of the family life, self-imposed goals are often resulting in interpersonal frictions and conflicts. What follows is an attempt to correct an error, with an action that only on the surface seems to be beneficial. In reality, it creates another problem. To give an example: George and Linda are having marriage problems, stemming from his mediocre income, and low standard of living that they have to endure. To improve the relationship, George goes out and buys on credit the most expensive TV set on the market, just to impress Linda.

Instead of hearing the words of admiration, he gets called an irresponsible person and one who’s hardly fit to be a head of the family. Have they visited CounsellingDirectory.INFO they'd have found the answers... Now, they have two conflicts and plenty of work for marriage and consumer credit counselors…

Debt counseling counselors are very busy nowadays, with many Americans finding it impossible to cope with their credit card repayments, mortgage and other loans all calling for their monthly fees and charges. Banks remain optimistic that consumers will be able to stave off the rising threat of bankruptcies and loan defaults. Counsellors don’t share this optimistic attitude…

Ultimately, it’s up to the public at large, to educate themselves about the financial issues that are at the core of their household budget management.

Public however, prefers to remain ignorant, borrowing more and more, to acquire consumer goods that have very little capital value, and depreciate rapidly. This sure is a recipe for financial trouble.

Federal government recognizes these issues, and the threat that debts present to the national economy. That’s why the resources allocated to financial counseling have risen 38% between 2004 and 2005. The associate problems, like increase in the divorce rate and growth of criminality, are met with very little attention. Perhaps their nature qualifies them to be dealt with by counseling offered by religious and beneficial organizations, usually run by charitable funds. In any event, ignoring these issues now may prove to be a costly mistake that all American taxpayers will pay for well into the future.

The only way to reduce the cases of bad credit card debts, bankruptcies, loan defaults, and other financial insolvency issues, is to expand counseling services. Even better, making it compulsory for any loan applicant, to undergo a course of sound money management practices. This undoubtedly would prepare customers better, and reduce the risk of them falling into the debt trap. Yes, counseling has a role to playArticle Submission, in the financial health of the nation. No matter how prosperous it is today…
