1 cup butter for shortening

5 over-ripe bananas, mashed well.

2 1/2 cups of sugar.

4 eggs

About three quarters of a cup of buttermilk.

Three cups of flour.

1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.

Salt - 1/2 a teaspoon.

1 cup chopped nuts

About one and a half teaspoons of vanilla.

Add the sugar and bananas together and slow add the eggs one at a time, beat them all together whilst you are adding the eggs. Put in the sifted baking soda, salt and flour. Add the buttermilk and any additional ingredients to the mixture to form a batter.

Empty the contents into 2 greased loaf pans but leave about an inch gap from the top of the pans to allow the bread room to rise. Bake for an hour and 20 minutes on 325 degrees.
