Are you getting tired of window crashes? Is your PC taking time to carry out tasks which could be done in seconds? Are you getting blue screen of death? Is your PC running slower you bought? Are you getting Windows error messages?

Corruption and increase in windows registry size are the common causes of window crashes; start up problems, PC freezing.

Windows registry is a database which has a hierarchal structure, like the directories on your hard disk. The registry contains two basic elements: keys and values. Keys are similar to folder, as folder contains further sub folders. Each key can contain other sub key which in turn contains other sub key, as well as values. Each value contains the actual information stored in the registry. Keys are referenced by backslashes to indicate level of hierarchy. For example- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows refers to the sub key "Windows" of the sub key "Microsoft" of the sub key "Software" of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key.

The registry is divided in to number of logical sections or hives .Hive names begin with HKEY. There are five main branches, and each contains specific information stored in the registry

1.HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT: This branch stores information about registered application, file types as well as OLE information for all OLE-aware applications.

2.HKEY_CURRENT_USER: This branch stores settings that are specific to the user currently logged in.

3.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: It stores settings that are general to all the users of the system, i.e. all of the hardware and software installed on your computer. Since multiple hardware configuration can be specify, the current hardware configuration is specified in HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG.

4.HKEY_USERS: This branch contains certain preferences such as colors and control panel settings for each of the users on the computer.

5.HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG: It contains information gathered at runtime; information stored in this key is not permanently stored on disk, but rather regenerated at boot time. It points to the part of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE appropriate for the current hardware configuration.

Due to unwanted, obsolete and invalid entries in the windows registry, the performance of the whole system degrades. To enhance the system performance, registry optimization must be employed.

Inbuilt registry editor in Windows enables you to view and edit contents of the registry. When you open registry editor, you will see a window named Registry Editor, divided into two panes. The left pane shows a tree with folders, and the right pane shows contents of the currently selected folder which can be edited manually. But editing registry can harm your computer and you should have complete knowledge about editing registry prior taking any step.

To run system efficiently and smoothly, it is preferable to employ registry cleaner software periodically to clean the registry. Many windows registry repair tools are available in the market which helps you to clean, repair and optimize your system registry. One of them is Chily Registry Cleaner and Optimizer which repairs registry errors and helps you to backup registry, defrag and compact it.

The selected windows registry repair software should be able to repair maximum of registry errors, remove invalid entries, cleanup wasted space and invalid entries and should be able to backup registry and restore it whenever required.
