Virus and Pushing Affecting Im Services

By: Jesse Miller

Instant messenger services have been affecting by viruses and phishing for years now. Especially designed for connections like Yahoo Messenger and America Online, the threads work basically the same.

Users will receive a message that is suppose to prompt them about something interesting, like it was with the film Star Wars Revenge Of Sith. There was a message and a link, and people were encouraged to access the respective link.

Virus creator will always take advantage of enthusiasm created by certain movies or new music releases. In the AOL virus case, the message text about start wars 3 was "hehe, I found this funny movie" and the word "this" was a hyperlink. The Yahoo message is referring to StarGames in the hidden link.

Both kinds of Im treats have a medium computer disaster potential. This is how they work. When a user clicks the link in the instant message, a malicious code is downloaded on his PC.

The code is installed and the virus will auto transmit itself at all the victims Yahoo contacts. The code also offers its attacker the possibility of controlling the victim's PC. The yahoo messenger link usually takes you to a site that looks just like a real Yahoo site, but it is in fact a part of a phishing scheme, that is trying to steal login information.

Phishing schemes are a prevalent tip of online fraud that try to steal sensible user information such as user names, passwords and credit cards info. Once you are on the yahoo similar site, you are asked to enter you personal yahoo info and then when you click ok the info will be send to the attackers email address.
