Genic Therapy

By: Abu Murad

With the advent of the tools for thorough analysis of the human genome, insane hopes started to be born in the spirit from the scientists but also from the patients. And if we were able to repair genes responsible for serious illness such as the myopathy or the hemophilia? Indeed, the ultimate goal of medicine is not so much to look after the symptoms to directly eliminate the causes from a disease. While being able to act in the middle same of our embarrassments, all became possible. Research was undertaken good train in this direction but without too many results for the moment. However, other techniques were born thanks to this work.

A first idea consists in injecting into our cells a specific embarrassment which will be able to act like a drug or to come to mitigate a deficiency of our genome. However, to penetrate in the middle of our cells is not a small matter. The researchers had the daring idea to use certain viruses, made inoffensive, which have the capacity known well to be transmitted in our cells in spite of the reactions of our immune system. These viruses that one would have affubles invaluable piece of therapeutic ADN would constitute the perfect vector of missing genetic information. These treatments would be palliative and be supposed to be renewed regularly. However, in addition to the traditional drug, a new way of cure of the alive beings is open.

Another derived idea appeared during research against cancer. If one became able, as it in laboratory, to penetrate in the middle of certain cells to act on their operation, why couldn't one is already the case destroy them? This simple idea, if it became realizable, would make it possible to get rid of sick cells without touching with the others. This technique would revolutionize the treatment of cancer where precisely, of the abnormal cells multiply in an unreasoned way. All the difficulty would be thus to find a good vector of this signal of cellular death, a vector which would bind only to the sick cells.

Research in genic therapy reaches still the embryonic stage but is already promised with a beautiful future. An important question is however profiled at the horizon: what will make the malintentionnes spirits of all these confusing discoveries? The worst is to be come.
