Make your Home a Smarty Pants!

By: Sam V

Smart homes, which are often referred to as intelligent or automated homes are not as complicated as people tend to imagine. Appliances within a smart home are given intelligence through programming, which would then allow the smart home owner to control and monitor security, vehicle detection, heating, lighting, sound systems and other potential features via a centralised control interface, which could be an on-screen GUI, (Graphical User Interface) a voice enabled... interface or simply through a device that looks like a remote control.

It is actually rather easy to automate your home, as there are a range of products out there that allow for this. The most well-known are the x10 modules that simply plug into a wall outlet and a lamp for example, can then be plugged straight into the module. These modules can receive instructions through wireless methods or through your homes own powerline system. You can even buy software for you PC that will allow you to control any appliance using a nifty interface, as long as, it's plugged in to an x10 module.

If you are interested in finding about the kinds of products that are available smart homes visit the smarthome website. You might want to look for starter kits to begin with that usually start around $49.99.
