What To Do In Cyprus

By: Derek Both

Other than the fact that Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, boasts citrus and olive groves, pine forested mountains, some of Europe's cleanest beaches and great weather all year round, what other reasons are there for people loving Cyprus holidays?

There is such a large variety of things to do on the island from water sports and sunbathing to sight - seeing and clubbing. The coast attracts sun seekers and party animals whereas inland is a haven of traditional villages, medieval castles and ancient sites. With such a range of things to do there is no doubt that Cyprus holidays are for everyone regardless of what they are looking for.

In the resort of Larnaca you can visit the ancient Kition which features the remains of five temples dating back to the 13th century BC. Many people are particularly interested in the Phoenician Temple of Astarte which was built on the ruins of an earlier Bronze Age temple.

If you think Cyprus holidays should be more about appreciating the beautiful scenery and being more active then a trip to the Baths of Aphrodite in Paphos is highly recommended. Legend has it that the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, used to take her baths here. There is a serene pool, shaded by a fig tree and surrounded by beautiful maindenhair fern. The site can be reached by nature trails from Akamas and many say that it is a very romantic trip.

Surprisingly, you can also go skiing and hiking in the mountains and hilltop villages whilst on Cyprus holidays. For hiking there are many unspoilt nature trails such as Atalante, Adonis and Machairas. For skiing Platres and Kakopetria which are on Mount Olympus are open during the skiing season between January and March.

It is hard to believe that Ayia Napa was once a small fishing village as now over 250,000 clubbers swarm to the resort every summer. Definitely not short of pubs, clubs and long sandy beaches, this is the place you go to relax in the day and party hard at night.

Protaras is more family friendly and also boasts the best beach on the island, Fig Tree Bay. The resort was purposely built for tourists and has plenty of restaurants, nightclubs, shops, hotels and holiday apartments. This resort is well suited to everyone regardless of what kind of Cyprus holidays they are after from family excursions to busy nightlife.

There are plenty of excursions to keep you entertained no matter whereabouts on the island you are staying. Day trips to Egypt are very popular as you can visit sites such as The Sphinx which is a mysterious sacred symbol and go on a cruise of the River Nile.

For an entertainment filled day out with a difference, you can go on a Pirate Cruise on the Jolly Roger II which was the first ever Pirate ship in Cyprus. There is plenty to keep the young and the old busy from face painting, Pirate shows, music and games to limbo dancing. There is even an opportunity to "Walk the Plank" so make sure you bring your swimming costumes.

One thing is for sure with Cyprus holidays and that is you will never be short of things to do and see on the charming Mediterranean island.
