DotNetNuke as a Scalable Content management System (CMS)

By: Brian Gilley

DotNetNuke (DNN) is one of the most versatile Content Management Systems (CMS) for ASP.NET that provides a complete framework to be expanded with tons of custom DNN modules. The modules for DNN can be used to perform various functions, from automated user forms or polls on the web page, to providing an on-line e-commerce shop where visitors can buy your products. Many other modules allow for picture gallery customization and even adding blog or community portal features.

DNN has all the capabilities to build a truly complete CMS backend for your web site. As with any web site using a CMS, the need to have static HTML pages can be adopted and transformed into custom definitions for the site template, site structure. Best of all, all of the content for your web site is stored within a database for easy backups.

DotNetNuke spawned from the IBuySpy project created by Microsoft. The main focus of that project was to provide a web complete portal with a shop. DotNetNuke and .NET developers have further developed the scalability of DNN to enable multiple portal control from one instance, along with a growing collection of modules.

One of the main features of DotNetNuke is with its versatile website management framework. Together with modules and skins, DNN provides the ability to add developed modules to handle specific functions and web site skins to change how web pages and containers look.

The source code for DotNetNuke is maintained by an open source community, similar to that of Linux. This means that anyone can adapt DNN code and make changes to fit their needs. Currently there are development companies and individuals who provide the modules and skins for this CMS. You can even find these modules or skins for free to extend the functions of the main code of DotNetNuke.

Another point to make about DotNetNuke is that it's fully customizable. Changes can be made to a site running DotNetNuke at all levels - from very basic stylesheet elements like font types, colors, and bullet points, to more advanced features like site appearance. New DotNetNuke skins and module containers can be easily applied to a web site with no repercussion on content.
